This Week in the Senate: 10/12/2020

This week, the Senate is out of session, with most senators back in their home-states due to COVID-19. Pro forma sessions (to prevent recess appointments) will be held on October 13th and October 16th. Next week, the Senate will return to the capital.

On Monday through Thursday, the Judiciary Committee will hold a nominations hearing for the following nominee:

    Supreme Court of the United States:
    1. Amy Coney Barrett, to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States
    On Monday, members of the Judiciary Committee will deliver opening statements, and after being introduced by Senators Todd Young and Mike Braun and Notre Dame Law School Professor Emerita Patricia O'Hara, Judge Barrett will deliver her opening statement.

    On Tuesday and Wednesday, members of the Committee will question Judge Barrett on any number of topics, including, but not limited to, her jurisprudence.

    On Thursday, the Judiciary Committee will hear testimony from outside witnesses regarding Judge Barrett's qualifications. Before that, the Committee will hold an executive session to vote on and/or hold over the following nominations (the number in the parentheses appearing after the nominee's name signifies whether this is the first or second time appearing on the agenda; first-time appearances are typically held over and nominees appearing for the second time usually receive votes):
      Supreme Court of the United States:
      1. Amy Coney Barrett, to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1)
        District Court:
        1. Benjamin Joel Beaton, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Kentucky (3)
        2. Kristi Haskins Johnson, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi (3)
        3. Taylor B. McNeel, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi (3)
        4. Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Middle District of Florida (3)
        5. Thompson Michael Dietz, to be a Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims (3)

              Will Trump Release a New SCOTUS List this Year? (Part 1)

              This is the first half of a two-part series detailing the future of Trump's Supreme Court list. Past presidential elections have featured presidents promising to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court, or more general vows to appoint justices who follow a given judicial philosophy.               This Week in the Senate: 4/8/2019

              This week, the Senate is holding votes on seven nominations, and the Judiciary Committee will convene a nominations hearing. Floor Action: Monday: No votes scheduled. Tuesday: The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of former Colorado Solicitor General Daniel Domenico to a district court seat in the state. Due to controversy regarding litigation stances he took while working for the state attorney general, this vote will likely be along party lines, with the exception of a probable yes vote from Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), who returned a blue slip on the nomination. After two hours, the Senate will then vote to confirm Domenico, and then will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Patrick Wyrick to be a district judge in the state's Western District.
