This Week in the Senate: 7/27/2020

This week, the Senate is holding votes on six nominations, including two to the judiciary, and the Judiciary Committee will convene a nominations hearing and an executive business meeting.

Monday:
  • The Senate will vote at 5:30 pm to confirm the nomination of Ogletree Deakins shareholder William Scott Hardy to be a Judge of the Western District of Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh. Hardy is opposed by Democrats for his work in employment litigation, and if confirmed, he would fill a vacancy from 2019.
Tuesday:
  • The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of United States Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana David C. Joseph to serve as a Judge of the Western District of Louisiana, in Alexandria. Joseph is opposed by Senate Democrats for his statements about election fraud and illegal immigrants. If confirmed, he would fill a vacancy from 2017. The Senate will then vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Dana T. Wade to be an Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. In the afternoon, the Senate will vote to confirm Joseph and Wade.
Wednesday:
  • The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Derek Kan to be Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget. In the afternoon, the Senate will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of National Labor Relations Board member Marvin Kaplan (R) to serve another five-year term. Following that vote, the Senate will vote to confirm him, and then will vote to invoke cloture on (and confirm) the nomination of former NLRB member Lauren McFerran (D) to serve the remainder of another five-year term.
Thursday:
  • The Senate will vote to confirm Kan.
On Wednesday, the Judiciary Committee will hold a nominations hearing for the following nominees:
    District Court:
    1. J. Philip Calabreseto be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio
    2. Aileen Mercedes Cannon, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida
    3. Toby Crouse, to be a U.S. District Judge for the District of Kansas
    4. James Ray Knepp II, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio
    5. Michael Jay Newmanto be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio
    On Thursday, the Judiciary Committee will hold an executive session to vote on and/or hold over the following nominations (the number in the parentheses appearing after the nominee's name signifies whether this is the first or second time appearing on the agenda; first-time appearances are typically held over and nominees appearing for the second time usually receive votes):
      District Court:
      1. David W. Dugan, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois (2)
      2. Hala Y. Jarbou, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Michigan (2)
      3. Iain D. Johnston, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois (2)
      4. Stephen P. McGlynn, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois (2)
      5. Franklin Ulyses Valderrama, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois (2)
      6. Roderick C. Young, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia (2)
