This Week in the Senate: 7/20/2020

This week, the Senate is holding votes on one bill and two nominations, and the Judiciary Committee will convene an executive business meeting.

Floor Action:¹
Monday:
  • The Senate will vote at 5:30 pm on confirmation of the nomination of Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget Russell Vought to serve as Director of the agency. Then, the Senate will continue debating S. 4049, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021.
Tuesday:
  • The Senate will continue consideration of the NDAA, with votes on amendments likely.
Wednesday:
  • The Senate will continue consideration of the NDAA, with votes on amendments likely.
Thursday:
  • The Senate will continue consideration of the NDAA, with a vote on final passage likely. The Senate will also vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Ogletree Deakins shareholder William Scott Hardy to be a Judge of the Western District of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh. Hardy is opposed by Democrats for his work in employment litigation, and if confirmed, he would fill a vacancy from 2019.
On Tuesday, the Finance Committee will convene a hearing to receive testimony from Tax Court nominees Christian N. Weiler and Alina I. Marshall.

On Thursday, the Judiciary Committee will hold an executive session to vote on and/or hold over the following nominations (the number in the parentheses appearing after the nominee's name signifies whether this is the first or second time appearing on the agenda; first-time appearances are typically held over and nominees appearing for the second time usually receive votes):
    District Court:
    1. John W. Holcomb, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Central District of California (2)
    2. Brett H. Ludwig, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin (2)
    3. R. Shireen Matthews, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of California (2)
    4. Todd Wallace Robinson, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of California (2)
    5. Christy Criswell Wiegand, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania (2)
    6. David W. Dugan, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois (1)
    7. Hala Y. Jarbou, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Michigan (1)
    8. Iain D. Johnston, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois (1)
    9. Stephen P. McGlynn, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois (1)
    10. Franklin Ulyses Valderrama, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois (1)
    11. Roderick C. Young, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia (1)
