This Week in the Senate: 6/10/2019

This week, the Senate is holding votes on at least eleven nominations, and the Judiciary Committee will convene an executive business meeting.

Floor Action:
Monday:
  • The Senate will vote to confirm the nominations of University of Akron School of Law Professor Ryan Holte and Covington & Burling lawyer Richard Hertling for the Court of Federal Claims, and Virginia Court of Appeals Judge Rossie Alston for the Eastern District of Virginia. These nominees were initially considered by the Senate last week. Then, the Senate will vote at 5:30 pm to invoke cloture on the nomination of Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation senior policy advisor Sarah Morrison to be a judge of the Southern District of Ohio.
Tuesday:
  • The Senate will vote to confirm the Morrison nomination, and then will vote to invoke cloture on and confirm the nominations of Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Pamela Barker (for the Northern District of Ohio) and Special Deputy Alabama Attorney General Corey Maze (for the Northern District of Alabama). Morrison and Barker are not controversial, but due to his work on death penalty appeals, among other representations, Maze's nomination will be confirmed along close to party lines.
Wednesday:
  • The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on and confirm the nominations of Florida state court judges Rodney Smith and Thomas Barber for seats on the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida, respectively. The final judicial nominee to be considered this week is DeKalb County Superior Court Judge J. P. Boulee, for the Northern District of Georgia, and the Senate will likely vote on cloture and confirmation of his nomination today as well. None of these nominations are particularly controversial.
Thursday:
  • The Senate will likely vote to invoke cloture on and confirm the nominations of David Stilwell (to be Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs) and Edward Crawford (to be Ambassador to Ireland).
At some point during the week, the Senate might vote on the nomination of Rita Baranwal to be the Assistant Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Energy.

On Thursday, the Judiciary Committee will hold an executive session to vote on and/or hold over the following nominations (the number in the parentheses appearing after the nominee's name signifies whether this is the first or second time appearing on the agenda; first-time appearances are typically held over and nominees appearing for the second time usually receive votes):
