This Week in the Senate: 4/8/2019

This week, the Senate is holding votes on seven nominations, and the Judiciary Committee will convene a nominations hearing.

Floor Action:
Monday:
  • No votes scheduled.
Tuesday:
  • The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of former Colorado Solicitor General Daniel Domenico to a district court seat in the state. Due to controversy regarding litigation stances he took while working for the state attorney general, this vote will likely be along party lines, with the exception of a probable yes vote from Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), who returned a blue slip on the nomination. After two hours, the Senate will then vote to confirm Domenico, and then will vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Patrick Wyrick to be a district judge in the state's Western District. Wyrick is the youngest person currently on the President's Supreme Court list, so expect vehement opposition from Senate Democrats. If cloture is invoked, a vote on confirmation will occur after two hours. The Senate will also vote to invoke cloture on, and ultimately confirm, the nomination of retired U.S. Army General John Abizaid to be Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Wednesday:
  • The Senate will vote to invoke cloture on and then confirm the nomination of Cheryl Stanton to be Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor. Then, the body will vote on cloture and to confirm two additional district court nominees: Holly A. Brady for the Northern District of Indiana, and David S. Morales for the Southern District of Texas. Both will be confirmed on close to party-lines. Brady has been attacked for her comments on Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, among other issues, and Morales has received criticism for his work in the Texas Attorney General's office, which included dismissing litigation against Trump University. After, the Senate will likely vote to invoke cloture on the nomination of Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt to become the permanent Secretary of the department.
Thursday:
  • The Senate will vote to confirm the Bernhardt nomination.
On Wednesday, the Judiciary Committee will hold a nominations hearing for the following nominees:

Department of Justice:
  1. Jeffrey A. Rosen, to be United States Deputy Attorney General
District Court:
  1. Jeffrey Vincent Brownto be a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Texas
  2. Stephanie L. Haines, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania
  3. Brantley Starr, to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Texas
